When I was 5 years old, my kindergarten teacher entered me into a drawing competition for elementary school-aged children from all over the country of Haïti. That’s where I was born. My Haïtian heritage informs my work & views on equality, justice & art.

I was ecstatic to learn that my drawing had been chosen to live in a museum in the capital of Port-Au-Prince. It was my first experience with utilizing art as an extension of my voice. I tell that story because it gives such a clear picture of who I am at my core and my motivations. The drawing was of a sailboat in the ocean at sunset and on the boat, inscribed “Ayiti libéré”, which translates to, “Haïti is Free”....

I was five years old.

  • “Joëlle facilitated a comprehensive and thoughtful participatory grant making process for the Committee of Neighborhoods through her work with DS4SI in partnership with the Emerald Necklace Conservancy. She is not only an exceptional designer of fashion, but she's also an empathic facilitator of cultural transformation. The way she can shape both garments and shape collective action toward justice is a beauty to behold: it's always culturally celebratory, incisive, attentive to detail, and empowering. Greater Boston is more brilliant and vital because of the clothes and collaborations she introduces to our public spaces."
